| Dear Steve and Jon, How important are the references I give to potential employers? I didn’t think employers checked them anymore. Who should I use as References? Signed: Without References |
Dear Without, The best reference would be a former supervisor, but some companies discourage this for legal reasons. Former clients or peers with whom you worked are also good, as would a recognized authority in your field. Whomever you choose, check with them in advance to confirm what they will say when called. I actually had an applicant once who supplied a potential employer with a personal reference who gave him a terrible recommendation! |
Dear Without, Like a prize coin collection, make your collection of references of the highest quality available to you, continually expanded and improved upon, and protected from abuse. Talk to your references regularly. Send them your latest resume and bring them up to date regarding your accomplishments subsequent to the time they actually observed you on the job. Only use those individuals you feel will be positive, articulate and willing to act in your behalf. When you use them as a reference, let them know you appreciate their help by sending them thank you notes. They may also like to hear from you at times other than when you are in a job search. |
