Ask The Employment Experts - Social Media

Steve Hines Dear Steve & Jon,

I keep getting invitations to join someone's LinkedIn, but I have heard so much negative about Social Media, I am hesitant to accept. What do you think?

Dear Hesitant,

When using any of the social media sites, or for that matter, the Internet in general, always remember that whatever you post on the Internet can stay there FOREVER. Be very careful what you post online, both text and pictures. Regarding LinkedIn, definitely join -- it's a "must" in your job search. It's strictly a networking site for professionals and their work, not for general social networking. In a recent survey, 80% of corporate recruiters indicated that they use LinkedIn as a primary recruiting tool. As I tell my clients, "If you are not LinkedIn, you are locked out!" So what about the others? MySpace is to be avoided for now, and Facebook and Twitter are ok. More later on this topic.

Dear Hesitant,

As a professional level job-seeker, you will hear two schools of thought. Some will say “connect with everyone”, while others will tell you to “build relationships”. While many job seekers find less professional social media sites consume more time than they are worth in a job search, LinkedIn is indeed valuable. Since the telephone is still the more effective mode of communications, relegate most internet use (whether it be communication, research or self promotion) to after hours. Recruiters use LinkedIn so you will want to have your resume, employment data and accomplishments updated and in good marketing form. Participation in carefully selected professional discussion groups online (like LinkedIn groups) can also give good opportunities to build your network.
