Dear Steve and Jon, A friend forwarded me an article establishing a reasonable work schedule while job hunting of only 3 to 4 hours of job search a day. Is that reasonable? Signed: Reasonable |

Dear Reasonable, I assume that schedule means you are still employed, and since companies strongly prefer to hire someone employed, definitely do not quit until you have a new job. Four hours per day is a minimum, and you should plan what must be done during the day and what can be done at nite – for example, do your web surfing at nite; networking, during the day. Most networking groups and professional associations meet at nite, so you should be able to attend them. If you are already unemployed, then organize your search keeping the same forty-hour work schedule you had with your last job. |
Dear Reasonable, If you have regularly worked 40+ hours a week in your career, it would seem “reasonable” to aim at spending those same hours furthering your career. Spending less time than that in your job search may cause you to be jobless longer than it should. You are probably trained to do other things besides marketing yourself and you may find the new task unusually fatiguing. Should you find you enjoy making 40+ cold calls a day, and have not yet found that ideal new job, then please send us your resume, because that is the mark of a successful recruiter. |
