| Dear Steve and Jon, I have had an interview for a Demand Planner position that I really want but their published salary scale is lower than I can accept. How do I negotiate to get a salary I can accept? Signed: Need more |
Dear Needs more, Although the salary may not be negotiable, other factors could be. They may consider a "sign-on bonus," a one-time cash payment when you begin employment. Another possibility is an early Performance Review, at which time you may be given a raise sooner than usual. Perhaps they will offer to pay for additional education, professional association dues or an extra week's vacation. Finally, they might value your experience enough to create a new job classification with a higher salary. |
Dear Needs more, The odds are probably low that the company will modify their salary range for you. You have done well delaying the salary discussion until after they have had an opportunity to fall in love with you. While talking with the hiring official (who may feel the urgency and possibly has more flexible than Human Resources) ask what the offer will possibly be and approach the subject as a problem to be solved by the two of you. |
