Ask The Employment Experts - Job Hopping

Steve Hines Dear Steve & Jon,

I have advanced well since graduating 5 years ago but I have had to change jobs frequently to do so.  Should I be concerned about the appearance of job-hopping?

Dear Perceived,

The “Retirement Gold Watch” of your grandfather’s era is gone. You are more likely to be questioned for staying too long than for changing frequently, especially in fast-paced industries like IT. Still, changing jobs with the seasons is frowned upon, and if you have more than three jobs in five years, you could be seen as opportunistic. If possible, you should describe yourself as a “consultant” and the employers as clients. If that is not accurate, be prepared to discuss how each job has enhanced your skill set and how much you now have to offer the company.

Dear Job Hopper,

IT employment frequently is project-to-project and defense contractors may expect employee movement from contract-to-contract. But, most other industries fear the loss of training investment and loss of critical company momentum associated with turnover of key players, and therefore shun job-hoppers. One option is to parley the benefits from your rapid advancement into a career in consulting, if you have the necessary sales ability and can endure the heavy travel. Otherwise, seek more stability in your selection of employers and exhibit some career self-discipline.
