Dear Near Certified, In today's job market, employers have a large pool of applicants from which to pick, and companies have increasingly turned to certification from professional associations as a way of separating the top talent from the also-rans. Certification is not freely given, but involves months of study and preparation and not all applicants pass the examinations. In addition, years of practical, on-the-job experience is required. Need proof that this certification is important? Check the online job boards and you will see the emphasis given to certification. |
Dear Near Certified, In my opinion, your priorities in today’s job market are, (1) keep the job you have, (2) find a new job, (3) gain the certification. But in reality, being certified may be important for both 1 or 2. If your employer pays for your certification, they do it as an investment for which they will expect, and likely receive, a significant return. If you have to spring for the certification cost yourself, look at it as your own investment in your career. The certification itself will only open a few doors. If you apply what you learn, the money you can make for your employers is the thing that will add value to you as an employee. |
