| Dear Steve and Jon, I weigh 300 pounds. Will that affect my chances of finding a job? Signed: Size Extra Large |
Dear Large, Companies are very "image conscious." They want the public to perceive of them in a positive way, and in our culture, obesity is often considered a negative. Even though the Americans With Disabilities Act forbids discrimination based on weight, you may find yourself a victim of this cultural bias. I have a close friend who is significantly overweight, perhaps obese, and is the CFO of an Atlanta bank. He has risen through the corporate ranks based on his stellar job performance, and your competence can reward you likewise. |
Dear Large, You must overcome the interviewer's possible conscious or unconscious perception that a very heavy person will not be a productive, energetic and stable employee. Project a positive image by dressing very professionally with immaculate personal grooming. Display body language that reflects confidence in yourself and in your accomplishments. Providing a plethora of documented examples of positive results achieved for your prior employer, is critical to proving you do not fit the bias profile. |
