| Dear Steve and Jon, I will be interviewing for a Business Analyst position in a multi-national, industrial manufacturing company. My recruiter has told me to wear a conservative business suit. Dress codes seem to have changed everywhere else. Wouldn't it be alright for me to wear 'business casual' rather than a stodgy old business suit? Signed: Not Business Suit Type |
Dear Business Casual, True, dress codes have changed but not your interview attire. Unless instructed differently, always dress conservatively and traditionally, and that generally means a business suit. In addition, pay attention to details such as polished shoes, clean fingernails, limited cologne, etc. Do not wear anything distracting, such as tinted glasses or flashy jewelry. |
Dear Business Suit Impaired, Your recruiter is probably responding to prior knowledge of the organization. Even though the interviewer could be in business casual, they may take exception to the interviewee not being in the interview uniform, a business suit. Of course, if the Interviewing Manager him or herself asks you to wear business casual, you should comply, but you still want to be the best dressed person at the interview. |
