I have a 6 inch long beard and have been told by my recruiter to shave it off before the interview. Really, how important is that, anyway?

Dear Bearded,

Every recruiter will be thinking the same as I am: Why do you have a 6 inch beard? What statement are you trying to convey? Just to be a non-conformist? Rebel? When is the last time you saw a top executive with a beard, much less a 6 inch one? I'm sorry, but you will have to choose between a meaningful career and your beard -- and your decision will answer my earlier questions. (Of course, you can grow it longer, bleach it white, and have a great seasonal career as Santa!)

Dear Bearded,

When applying for certain jobs a beard may not be a detriment at all – a lumberjack, an eccentric millionaire, a tree hugger. Even many more mainstream professions are becoming more accepting of beards, body piercings and tats. But at a minimum, a shaggy beard or mustache that covers the mouth in any way, is a communications barrier and creates a sense of distrust. I encourage getting rid of obstacles. If that beard is a critical part of your personality, keep it and just plan on going on twice as many interviews to find that next job.
